Representation of regional identity

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sNf-MwxTSE&safe=active

Summary of how regional identity is represented in this extract.

This extract is set in Cornwall, England where people are usually stereotyped as middle or even lower class which work as farmers or have other lower played jobs. For example, in the extract we see that there are two who seem to be plumbers which is very stereotypical for the place they live in. There is also a man (Doc Martin) dressed very smartly in a suit with a British accent which challenges the stereotypes of the place he lives in. Accent is another way of regional identity being represented in this extract. The dad has a very strong Welsh accent as well as some other people who appear later on in this video. When Doc Martin walks down the street, the surrounding are very typical for the the area of Cornwall which is located by the seaside, we see little, local cafés and souvenir shops.

(Camera Angle) - tracking shot

In this clip, regional identity is represented by the use of a tracking shot. The tracking shot moves as he walks which shows he's in a hurry and is a busy person as the camera moves quite fast, this challenges the stereotypes of people in this town. We also get to see the surroundings of the town, the typical souvenir shops and little local cafes really show where this TV drama is set.

Representation of sexuality

1. What do the camera angles tell us about the characters?

A close up and a mid shot show the characters face in more detail which make the audience more familiar with them.

2.Whose pespective are we seeing this through and why?

Through the use of camera angles in this clip the audience gets to see the pespective of the two woman looking at each other in the mirror and makes them fell lik they are in the same room. This is created by the positioning of the camera and the way we only see the reflection of the two female characters instead of thir back or them actually looking into the mirror.

 3. Why has a dissolve been used here? Is it long or is it short? Why do you think that is? What is the effect?

I think the dissolve effect was used there to show the time passing and the change of mise en scene. The dissolve lasts for about 2/3 seconds which seems quite long and i think this created a bit of tension as the audience doesnt know what is going to come up on the screen next.

4. What can you say about the camera angles used in this scene? What does it tell us about sexuality in this era?

This clip starts off with a full body shot of both women lying in bed and them starts zooming into the woman's hand which is trying to touch the other woman's body. By using this the audience focuses mainly on the hand and the gestures in this scene.

5.What camera angles and shots are used here? Choose from the following:
Point of view
High camera angle?
Low camera angle?
Pan
Tilt
Close up

Close up, pan and high camera angle.

6. Why have these camera angles been used? What do they tell us about the character? What do they tell us about homosexuality (especially considering the context of the programme)

A close up was used to show clear emotions on the woman's face, a pan was used so add more realism for example it gives audience a feel of being there and turing their head as the man walks past. A high camera angle was used to make the woman look vunrable and like she is the victim. This make teh audience fell more sympathy for her. Homosexuality is represented as bad in this clip as the homosexual woman is shown as a victim by the use if a high camera angle as well as the use of a close up shot on the other woman's face which shows an emotion of fear.

7. How does the editing and camera angles/ shots construct meaning in this sequence?
Meaning in this short sequence is mainly created by the use of music and some camera angles. A closeup shot is used to emphesise the woman's body parts which makes her seem as a sex object. The way this scene is edited is we see the woman painting then the other woman's body part and this is repeated twice. The music in the bakcgroud is very calm and peacful but as soon as the red paint drops off the paint brush, the music gets more dramatic and creates tension between the characters.

 8. What do you think the purpose of the narrator is? How does it make the audience feel?

I think this makes the audience a little bit nervous about this situation as the red paint which looks like blood might be foreshadowing somethimg that could later happen in the clip. Also I think thsi makes teh audience fell more sympathy for the girl sleeping as she is seen as 'the victim'.

 9. How does media language communicate that heterosexuality is the dominant ideology of the time? Use TubeChop to illustrate your answer

http://www.tubechop.com/watch/2788702

In this clip we see that a homosexual boy tells his father about his sexuality and that he thinks its wrong and he think he will let people down. In tv dramas we don't really see heteroexual people making big speeches about their sexuality and noone makes a big deal about it however when its a homosexual person, there's always a big 'drama' and a lot of tears involved with shows the audience that homosexuality is seem as wrong.

10. What does the composition tell us about the characters?

 11. What does the mise-en-scene tell us about the characters?  Think about what happens outside and inside.

The two homosexual women only get close to eachother when they are inside the house, it's like they are hiding their relationship becasue when they go outside, we hardly see they speak to each other.

 12. Using TubeChop or screen shots, find examples of how mise-en-scene constructs representations of sexuality in this extract and explain how it constructs representations.

This is an example of how sexuality is represented by the use of mise-en-scene in this extract. In this picture we see two woman standing in a dark room and looking in the mirror. The fact that the room is dark and the lights are switched off emphesises the fact that they are trying to hide their relationship.
